Good morning, Bears fans!
Weird schedule and I’ve been off all week coming off that Monday night game, but at least we’re happy and we’re getting to Sunday either way (and sooner!)
Full preview newsletter tomorrow. Live pod at 7 tonight.
Finally, thank you to everyone who’s recently become a Bears By 7 member. Your support is very much appreciated!
Headlines
Kyler Gordon activated off PUP list This is not a drill. Gordon’s 21-day practice window is officially open and he can return to the field as soon as Week 5 against Green Bay. Not every Bears fan will be mature about this, but let’s hope #6 gets back to his old Spidey self.
Braxton Jones ‘week to week’ Depth danger, Will Rogers. The left tackle is nursing a right knee injury and it’s unclear if Ozzy Trapilo can return by Sunday. Theo Benedet struggled against the Eagles and there’s no world you want to start shuffling the line in search of a Band-Aid … though Ben briefly switching Darnell Wright and Jonah Jackson to the left side of the line on Monday night was great fun.
Gervon Dexter gets $78 million extension in Atlanta Big Dex gets the money ($46.5 million guaranteed) that can set his family up for generations. Dexter wasn’t going to get this deal in Chicago, but I’m happy he was able to get it from old friend Ian Cunningham.
Jayden Reed done for year Season-ending neck surgery. Lousy news for the Packers receiver and Metea Valley/Naperville Central product.

Top Secret (For Now)

Ben Johnson won’t reveal whether it’ll be Case Keenum or Tyson Bagent starting against the New York Jets on Sunday.
In fact, he went as far as to say that the Bears have three good quarterbacks, which might resurrect Caleb Williams as an option for anyone who would think the Bears would rush him back for a top-rated matchup against Geno Smith. (sarcasm font)
But yes, Johnson is back at his midweek gamesmanship while everyone has an opinion on who should start.
Our friend Silvy of ESPN 1000 ran this poll the other day with almost half the respondents leaning toward Case:

I was leaning toward Keenum and the hot hand at the time I voted, but I’ve since put myself in the “doesn’t matter” camp.
After watching Keenum carve up the Eagles on Monday night, I’m convinced Johnson could build a successful game plan around Uncle Rico or whoever’s starting at quarterback for Lane Tech this fall.
(Unless it’s raining, and thank god it’s a sunny forecast this weekend.)
I also think it’s going to be Bagent under center come kickoff, based on rumblings I’ve heard and the tea leaves we can read. (Johnson said the “direction” has already been made for Sunday’s starter.
There’s no doubt that Keenum put together a storybook start against the Eagles and it resulted in a win we’ll be talking about for a long time.
But the Bears gave Bagent that extension for a reason and he’s performed well in every role that Johnson has given him to this point. I also don’t think Johnson is a “you can lose your job to injury” guy.
Plus, Johnson has the opportunity to bring in a new quarterback that the Jets don’t have any regular season tape on, as opposed to a 38-year-old who still has real limitations despite Monday’s result.
We’ll see who ultimately gets the nod — and man it would be wild if Caleb gets back in — but I think the only question now is when we find out that Bagent is getting his first start since 2023.
Who do you think should start on Sunday? Reply to this email and I’ll print some responses in tomorrow’s newsletter!
