Well, what do you think?

The Chicago Bears and the NFL finally dropped the long-awaited “Rivalries” uniforms on Tuesday morning and they’re probably not what anyone was expecting.

Instead of an all-white “polar bear” concept or something more-aggro looking, the Bears uniforms harken back to the basics with a ""modern update”: A midnight blue jersey with retro orange lettering, multi-colored striping on the sleeve and the same George Halas patch they wore in 1983 after his death.

Both the helmet and pants are also orange, which almost makes it seem like a jersey unveiling for the Illini football team. (The ties between the two teams, of course, are numerous.)

Chicago Bears/NFL

The Bears will wear the uniforms at home against the Green Bay Packers on Christmas Day. Each NFC North and AFC South team received new Rivalries uniforms on Tuesday and each has a retro feel.

Fans will be able to purchase the jerseys starting September 1.

As noted by Brendan Sugrue of Bears Wire, this is the first new look for the Bears since the 100th anniversary uniforms in 2019 with the winged helmets

A few quick reactions to the unveiling:

  • The initial response to the uniforms has been one of disappointment and I think that’s natural when everyone had a different idea of what they might be. I made a quick joke that’s already going viral when they were first leaked, but I’m already coming around to them. And there’s no doubt we’ll all eventually view them as classics if the Bears beat the Packers on Christmas.

  • It’s probably time to give up on the dream of the Bears or NFL ever messing with the uniforms too much. They’re the league’s charter franchise and one that — for better or worse — is deeply rooted in its history. Virginia McCaskey was never going to greenlight anything radical and there’s probably no chance that her son George will either. If you have to wager, the smart bet is that any Bears uniform will always look back instead of forward.

  • I still don’t understand why the Bears and Packers aren’t both wearing the uniforms in each of their matchups. (The Packers will only wear theirs in the October 13 game against the Bears.)

  • If I could make one change, I’d take off the GHS patch (sorry Papa Bear) and replace it with the bear crawling on top of the football logo that’s in the graphic above. That would’ve made the jersey a must-buy for me.

  • That said, I’ll still be putting a No. 18 on my Christmas list. Better start getting on my best behavior.
