Good morning, Bears fans!
So the NFL’s OTAs are voluntary thanks to the CBA and it got me to wondering: Is there anything in real-world jobs that’s comparable?
In other words, do you have anything related to your job that you don’t have to show up for, even though it’s beneficial to you and your teammates if you do?

Summer is here and training camp isn’t far off. You need some fresh t-shirts and hats to wear around the practice fields … and also by the grill, on the boat or at the park.
That’s where Talley Brand comes in. Rob is a Bears fan who makes gear that instantly identifies you as a fan of the beloved, no matter where you wear it. He sent me a nice haul the other week and as a hat guy, I can’t get over how much I love the hats.
In fact, I love them so much that I’m sending one to a Bears By 7 member this week as a way to say thanks for supporting the newsletter.

Stock up for the summer today and get 10 PERCENT OFF + FREE SHIPPING when you use code BEARSBY7 at checkout.

Scaled back bill in works?
It’s t-minus three days and still plenty of work to be done. Justin Laurence of Crain’s Chicago Business reported on Wednesday that lawmakers are considering cutting the megaprojects bill to just the Bears. That would effectively punt on a messier statewide PILOT incentive debate and allow the legislature to run a two-minute drill to keep the Bears in Illinois. (Did I hit enough football references?)

No formal charges for Jacobs yet
The Brown County District Attorney’s Office is “not prepared to make a formal charging decision” and requested an additional investigation following the arrest of the Packers RB on Tuesday. More details on NFL.com.

OTAs get underway
No press conferences or media availability so we’ll have to rely on the team’s social media content for news. Hey look! If you slow down this Coby Bryant video, it looks like both Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon were on the field and in uniform.
1️⃣0️⃣8️⃣ Days Until The Season Opener

“My dead grandmother would have to come back to life for the Bears to go to Indiana. That is all BS, that they're going to Indiana. It is a toxic site.”

Beat it with the Cole Kmet trade talk
I don’t want to imagine a Bears future that doesn’t include Cole Kmet.
Yet the fine folks at ESPN put all of us up to it on Wednesday with a hypothetical trades article that listed potential teams and returns for our hometown tight end.
The landing spots included the Panthers, Ravens, Chiefs and Dolphins.
The returns ranged from a 2028 third-round pick (a not-terrible consolation prize) to simply upgrading a 2027 fifth to a 2027 third (not enough mehs in the world).
Courtney Cronin played the role of arbitrator in the exercise and didn’t think any of the four trades would pass Brad Muster with the Bears front office.
Bears Twitter reacted to the fake trades as you would expect.
Still, the rest of the NFL world seems hell bent on moving Kmet out of town and maybe that makes sense with their 30,000-foot view.
The Bears, after all, spent the 11th pick in the 2025 draft on Colston Loveland, a special talent who should be occupying a locker at Halas Hall for the next decade.
Then they spent a third-round pick in this year’s draft on Sam Roush.
That view conveniently ignores a trio of facts:
Kmet is the longest-tenured Bear (drafted seven picks before Jaylon Johnson) and one of the most-respected leaders in the locker room.
Ben Johnson wants to play plenty of 13 personnel, a plan that would grow more difficult without Kmet’s experience and skill on the roster.
Ryan Poles reiterated the team’s support for Kmet after drafting Roush and his contract was restructured to reduce his 2026 cap hit to $7.775 million.
Kmet’s cap hit will increase to $15.425 million in 2027 and so this exercise would make more sense a year from now for a team in desperate need of a capable tight end.
Again, I’m not ready for that.
And I’ll fully admit that I can’t be rational when it comes to Kmet.
Not when he’s been a local product who’s done everything his hometown team has asked of him and turned in some of the best highlights of the last decade (or ever, in the case of the catch in the Rams game).
And certainly not after getting the chance to work with him at CHGO and getting to know him as a genuinely good dude.
If the Bears can actually climb the mountain and win another Lombardi Trophy, it’d be that much better with #85 helping write the story.
I know, I know.
Building a consistent winner and Super Bowl contender means making tough decisions and saying goodbye a year too early instead of a year too late. Operating with your head instead of your heart is part of the reason DJ Moore will be wearing a Buffalo Bills helmet in 2026.
But with Kmet, it’s my hope that both player and team can figure out a way to reach the storybook ending together whether it’s a smart extension after this year or just going ahead and winning the whole damn thing in 2026.
No other outcome would seem right, would it?

I feel bad for the NFC North, but Caleb to Colston is tremendous content.
