Good morning, Bears fans!

Welcome to all the old frents finding their way back here and the new ones I picked up from last night’s appearance on GN Sports. Glad you’re here!

To everyone: It’s Game Week! The Browns come calling at Soldier Field on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for noon with plenty of questions needing answers. More below …

Headlines

Luther Burden out with a groin injury: Not the worst news after LBIII exited Saturday’s practice with a limp … but certainly not the best. He’ll miss “a little bit of time” according to Ian Rapoport. (Twitter)

Zavion Thomas leaves practice early: Make it stop. The rookie WR went down in the Walter Payton Center during Sunday’s practice and left with a trainer. We’ll see if he’s out and about at tonight’s practice at Stevenson, weather permitting. (Adam Hoge)

Bears shuffle secondary depth with roster moves: In are Xavier Woods, Brandon Hill, William Wright and Beanie Bishop, out are KC Eziomume and Gervarrius Owens (injury designation). Dallis Flowers was also placed on the reserve/injured list after being injured in last Thursday’s practice.

Long snapper competition already over? Luke Elkin was also waived over the weekend, which leaves undrafted rookie Beau Gardner as the only long snapper in camp. Well, not counting Cole Kmet, of course. (Bears Wire)

Lions looking for backup QB after Teddy Bridgewater retires: What’s with playing in Detroit that causes all these surprise summer retirements?

New Questions That Need Answers

Kevin Kaduk/Bears By 7

The Bears headed into this year’s training camp with a lot of questions, many of them we had discussed since the team fell short against the Rams.

But today, 10 practices into training camp, we’re looking at a new batch of challenges created from the action at Halas Hall.

Here’s a half-dozen questions we need answers to over the next few weeks, starting with this Saturday’s preseason game against Cleveland:

  1. How much time will Luther Burden miss (and who makes the most of the opportunity)? The timeline for a normal groin is usually 2-3 weeks but that, uh, region can be fickle as Jaylon Johnson proved in 2025. The Bears should give Burden all the rest he needs over the next month, which will create plenty of preseason targets for others. Jahdae Walker stands to benefit most in his quest to become a bona fide WR3, but Rome Odunze gets the temporary chance to be an undisputed WR1 without Burden or DJ Moore kicking around. The rest of the receiver room — including camp darling Kaden Davis — also won’t say no to the possibility of more balls thrown their way.

  2. Who can help salvage the secondary? The biggest camp injury still belongs to Coby Bryant … and hopefully it stays that way. Still, the subsequent sidelining of Bryant replacement Cam Lewis as well as injuries to Elijah Hicks, Terrell Smith, Jaylon Jones and Kyler Gordon have sent the team scrambling. New addition Xavier Woods is a nine-year vet and made an immediate impact with the 1s on Sunday by starting at safety and coming away with an interception. Rookies Dillon Thieneman and Malik Muhammad proving themselves capable during the preseason would also go a long way, but there’s still plenty for them to learn.

  3. Who starts at LT if not Braxton Jones? The injury that Jones suffered on Thursday isn’t expected to keep him out long, but he missed both weekend practices and is coming off an injury-riddled 2025. If he can’t go, the Bears are rolling the dice on a reclamation project in Jedrick Wills or relying on Kiran Amegadjie to reach a level he simply hasn’t yet. Both players will get plenty of run during the three preseason games to prove they belong.

  4. Is Garrett Bradbury the season-long starter? Many of us came into this camp presuming a camp battle between Bradbury and second-round pick Logan Jones. But Bradbury has earned plenty of praise upon his arrival, including from head coach Ben Johnson and veteran Cole Kmet, who said there was no dropoff from the retired Drew Dalman. Given the lack of depth in other units, this would qualify as a nice problem to have.

  5. Can Jordan van den Berg make an actual impact? The rookie sixth-rounder’s run with the 1s got a lot of people talking (hoping?) this week, but we’re really going to need to see how he performs against another team to know just what he can bring to the Bears this season.

  6. How much will Caleb play in the preseason games? I’m not sure if this really qualifies as a “new” question, but the early rash of injuries to key players has no doubt lessened Johnson’s appetite for risk. With joint practices against Tennessee and Cincinnati to help get the work in, I’m going long on Williams not taking an actual preseason snap.
