The Bears are moving on from the pre-Ben Johnson and Dennis Allen era, though not totally: Gervon Dexter, Kiran Amegadjie and Terrell Smith said goodbye to Halas Hall this weekend, which brings the number of Bears players that were here before Ben Johnson to just 20. (h/t Mark Potash). That sort of turnover is to be expected, but it hasn’t turned into a total housecleaning. Roschon Johnson was kept in the backfield over Salvon Ahmed and Braxton Jones continues to hold down a spot on the offensive line.

Would Gervon Dexter have been cut if the Falcons hadn’t shown interest? It sure seems like it. To hear the Halas Hall media crew talk about it, Dexter’s star had been waning among the coaching staff and players like Jordan van den Berg, Jayden Loving, Jamree Kromah and even James Lynch (who was waived) had outplayed him in camp. Given his upcoming need for a new contract and his not fitting into Allen’s defensive vision, Dexter ended up being the odd man out. That said, I wonder how much the Bears will miss Dexter’s dependability. Over three seasons, he appeared in 17, 15 and 17 games. That’s not nothing for a defense that has struggled to keep players on the field the past calendar year.

Marcus Davenport has had an interesting few weeks: The defensive lineman was signed on August 17, never practiced with the Bears and then was cut on Sunday. But before you post the Grandpa Simpson arriving/leaving GIF, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune thinks there’s a good chance the 30-year-old is re-signed to the practice squad where the Bears can get a longer look at what he might have left.

The Ruben Hyppolite pick is going to be a punchline for a long while: Ryan Poles has made some really bad picks in the mid to late rounds, but the linebacker from Maryland stands out. How far out of left field was the selection? I was running the draft board for ALLCITY draft expert Fran Duffy and he had prepared hundreds of scouting reports for me to queue when their names were called. I asked him what I should do if he didn’t have a scouting report written and he told me not to worry, it probably wouldn’t happen until the sixth or seventh round. Well, it happened in the fourth round when Poles made a giant reach based on some outlier pro day numbers. Just over a year later and to the surprise of no one, they’re already saying goodbye to Hyppolite. According to Brendan Sugrue of Bears Wire, Hyppolite is the first Bears player selected in the fourth round or higher to get waived after just one season since fourth-rounder Evan Rodriguez in 2012. And that’s because he was arrested twice.
